As I have repeated repeatedly over the years , I first discovered music and radio on the school bus in the fall of , and those twin obsessions have never left me. But in late August , a week or so before I would go off to Mrs. Makes Van Halen sound like pussies. The version that was a hit in is a different recording, however—but as for the provenance of each one, who the hell knows. I believe the instrumental track is the same on both, but mixed differently on each; the vocal is clearly different on each recording. However, listening to them side-by-side as you can do below , the hit version sounds like the work of a callow young singer just learning how to perform, while the hit version sounds like the work of a more mature singer—an impression shared by The Mrs.
So far, watching Solitary Man, I can’t help but feel that it’s unfinished. I mean, I know I’ve only watched ten minutes of it, that’s not what I mean. It just doesn’t seem like they finished processing it or whatever. It reminds me of the time I got sent a tape with pilot episodes of several hopeful sitcoms.

If you’re a lone wolf, a one-man band, a rugged individualist, or an island unto yourself, you prefer to be solitary — in other words, alone or single. The term can be used to describe a person, a place, or a thing. Solitary comes to us from the Latin solus , which means alone. Note its similarity to words like solo and, for all you card players out there, solitaire.
solitary definition: The definition of solitary is someone or something that is single, lonely or alone. (adjective) An example of solitary is a person living in a large.
It is sometimes strange how your eyes will catch on a single person in a crowded place. Something about them gets your attention; perhaps their attractiveness, or perhaps their outgoing personality, or maybe it is simply because they are the only person directly in your line of vision. None of these reasons fit on that morning when we entered the tiny village of Kasitu located deep in the Dowa Valley east of Lilongwe. Of all of the people that crossed my line of sight I found that my eyes had locked on Zuze Moyo.
It was not for any of the reasons I have just mentioned, for he was not attractive, nor did he have an outgoing personality. Nor was he directly in my line of vision as I got out of the car and started walking toward the church building where the meeting was about to begin. Zuze was stumblingly clawing his way through a high patch of weeds trying, it seemed, to get away from the line of travel of the people going to the building. His crippled features and his tattered clothes made him stand out from the other village people who lived nearby or from those who had come for the meetings.
For a long moment I could not take my eyes off of him, then we passed and I was hesitate to look back.

Like the heroes of his previous three novels, the central character here is a gay man looking for love, and he has finally found it: he is in love with his own grief. Oddly, though, this latest book seems richer if you have the luck to approach it, as I did, without having read those earlier books first. Only then does the narrator, a middle-aged man who lost his mother several years before, reach beyond his own mourning and speak movingly about universal emotions.
This unnamed narrator has arrived in Washington from a small town in the South, where he devoted a dozen years to caring for his mother, paralyzed and living in a nursing home. In the city to teach for a semester, he rents a room from another middle-aged gay man, who is always referred to as “my landlord. The narrator is profoundly lonely, and his isolation allows him to focus on — at times to wallow in — the nature of grief itself.

I recently picked up a CD of his Bang material, probably a boot, and it has 2 versions of the song, neither of which is the right one. Is the right one anywhere other than the 45?

The trailer is now back online, and embedded after the jump. The film stars Academy Award winner Michael Douglas as a former car dealership mogul dealing with a string of business problems and issues in his personal life through a number of relationships with women — many women. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to mostly positive buzz.

Drawing together the Michael Douglas mystique from both Wall Street and Fatal Attraction , Solitary Man casts Douglas as a predatory lion in winter, an alpha male led astray by his greed and his zipper.

One Solitary Life. He was born in an obscure village. The child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure village. Where he worked in a carpenter.
There are two types of good movies. The movie may stay with you for any number of reasons. Maybe a character reminded you of someone. Maybe the movie puzzled you in a good way. Maybe there was a scene you cannot stop thinking about. The movie Solitary Man falls into the latter category for me. Douglas plays a womanizer and former car dealership owner who sees many of his bad decisions catch up to him.
You may not like or admire the character, but he comes across as a real person, not a caricature, and you most likely will want to see what happens next. The scenes between Douglas and Danny DeVito are excellent in a way that may only be possible when played by two old friends portraying two old friends. In the DVD extras, Jenna Fischer who you might know from The Office recalls how when she read the script before knowing the cast, she could only think of Michael Douglas in the lead role.
Douglas does such a great job, there is only one other person I could imagine in the role.

After ” Psycho “, Mr. Alfred Hitchcock is as busy as ever: if anything, even busier, for apart from keeping a fatherly eye on the televison series ” Alfred Hitchcock Presents “, he has added two new feature films to his schedule, both of which will be made before the previously announced ” No Bail for the Judge “, an adaptation of Mr. Laurence Harvey. First on the list is ” Village of Stars “, adapted from the suspense novel by Mr.

This concerns the plight of a pilot sent out to drop a powerful bomb on an unspecified target and then called back; the bomb is designed to explode when it drops below a certain altitude, the defusing mechanism refuses to work, and the plane’s supply of fuel is limited. The film will be made in colour and Vistavision. An equally characteristic situation occurs in the second film.
Hitchcock will direct in Cinemascope for Twentieth Century-Fox early next year.
